Miscellaneous Funeral Poems and Verses

God Took You To His Loving Home

God saw you getting tired, a cure was not to be.
He wrapped you in his loving arms and whispered ‘Come with me.’
You suffered much in silence, your spirit did not bend.
You faced your pain with courage, until the very end.
You tried so hard to stay with us but your fight was not in vain,
God took you to His loving home and freed you from the pain.

Something Beautiful Remains

The tide recedes but leaves behind
bright seashells on the sand.
The sun goes down, but gentle
warmth still lingers on the land.
The music stops, and yet it echoes
on in sweet refrains..
For every joy that passes,
something beautiful remains.

You Never Said Goodbye

You never said I’m leaving
You never said goodbye
You were gone before I knew it,
And only God knew why.
A million times I needed you,
A million times I cried
If love alone could have saved you,
You never would have died
In life I loved you dearly
In death I love you still
In my heart you hold a place,
That no one will ever fill
It broke my heart to lose you,
But you didn’t go alone
For part of me went with you,
The day God took you home.

Only The Best

A heart of gold stopped beating,
two shining eyes at rest,
God broke our hearts to prove
He only takes the best.
God knows you had to leave us
but you did not go alone
for part of us went with you
the day He took you home.
To some you are forgotten
to others just part of the past
but to us who loved and lost you,
the memory will always last.

All Is Well

Death is nothing at all.. I have only slipped away into the next room, I am I and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, that we still are. Call me by my old familiar name. Speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Put no differences into your tone. Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me. Let my name ever be the household name that it always was. Let it be spoken without effect, without the ghost of a shadow on it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it always was. There is unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am waiting for you for an interval somewhere very near just around the corner ….All is well.

Canon Henry Scott Holland

If tears could build a stairway
And memories make a lane,
We would walk right up to Heaven
To bring you home again.
No farewell words were spoken
No time to say Good-bye.
You were gone before we new it.
And only God knows why.
Our hearts, they ache in sadness
And secret tears still flow.
What it meant to lose you,
No one will ever know.
You are with the Angels
High in your heavenly home,
We would have held you closer,
If we had only known

If I Should Go Tomorrow

If I should go tomorrow
It would never be goodbye,
For I have left my heart with you,
So don’t you ever cry.

The love that’s deep within me
Shall reach you from the stars.
You’ll feel it from the Heavens,
And it will heal the scars.

I’m Still Here

Please don’t mourn for me,
I’m still here, though you don’t see.
I’m right by your side each night and day
And within your heart I long to stay.

My body is gone but I’m always near.
I’m everything you feel, see and hear.
My spirit is free but I’ll never depart,
As long as you keep me alive in your heart.

I’ll never wander out of your sight.
I’m the brightest star on a warm summer night.
I’ll never go beyond your reach.
I’m the warm moist sand when you’re at the beach.

I’m the colourful leaves when winter comes round
And the pure white snow that blankets the ground.
I’m the beautiful flowers of which you’re so fond.
The clear cool water in a quiet pond.

I’m the first bright blossom you see in the spring.
The first shiny raindrop that storm clouds bring.
I’m the first ray of light when the sun starts to shine
And you’ll see that the face in the moon is mine.

When you start thinking there’s no one to love you,
Talk to me and I will listen.
I’ll whisper my answer through the leaves on the trees
And you’ll feel my presence in the soft summer breeze.

I’m the hot salty tears that flow when you weep
And the beautiful dreams that come while you sleep.
I’m the smile you see on a stranger’s face.
Just look for me…
I’m everyplace.

Because Of You

Because of you,
The world is a much nicer place.

Because of you,
I have faith in the human race.

Because of you,
I know what it means to love unconditionally.

Because of you,
I know what it means to give unselfishly.

Because of you,
I believe in magic and mystery and worlds unseen.

Because of you,
There is joy – wherever you are and have ever been.

And all because of you!

Fearless And Ready To Go

Dear ones, there’s something you
need to know;
Death has knocked upon my door –
and I am ready to go.
I have no strength left within
me to stay and fight,
And I have no desire to – now
I’ve seen the light.
For the light of death is brighter
than the light of day,
And death’s sweet voice is calling
me – calling me away.
So dear ones, very soon I know
that you will weep,
As my body falls into a peaceful
But read these words I’ve written
once again, and you will see,
I welcome death with loving arms –
it holds no fear for me.

“I am standing upon the seashore. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky mingle with each other.

Then someone at my side says “There, she is gone.”

“Gone where?”

“Gone from my sight. That is all.”

She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as when she left my side and she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at that moment when someone says “There, she is gone” there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout – “Here she comes!”

by Henry Van Dyke

Im Free

Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free
I’m following the path God laid for me.
I took His hand when I heard Him call;
I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day,
To laugh, to love, to work or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way;
I found that place at the close of day.

If my parting has left a void,
then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss;
Ah yes, these things, I too will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow,
I wish you sunshine for tomorrows.
My lifes been full, I savoured much;
good friends, good times,
A loved ones touch.

Perhaps my time seems all to brief,
don’t lengthen it with undue grief.
Lift up your heart and share with me,
God wants me now, He set me free.

Please, don’t ask me if I am over it.
I will never be over it!
Please, don’t tell me he is in a better place.
He isn’t here with me!
Please, don’t tell me he isn’t suffering.
I haven’t come to terms with why
he had to suffer at all.
Please, don’t ask me if I feel better.
For bereavement isn’t a condition that clears up.
Please, don’t tell me,
At least you had him for so many years.
What year would you choose for your loved one to die?
Please, don’t ever tell me that,
God doesn’t give us more then we can handle.
Please, just say you are sorry.
Please, just say that you remember him.
Please, just talk to me about him.
Please, just mention his name.
Please, just let me cry.

God Saw You Getting Tired

God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be

So he put his arms around you and whispered “Come With Me.”

With tearful eyes we watched you, slowly fade away,

Although we loved you dearly, we would not make you stay.

A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest.

God broke our hearts to prove to us,

He only takes the best.

Now That I’m Gone

Now that I am gone,
remember me with smiles and laughter.
If you need to cry,
cry with your brother or sister
who walks in grief beside you.
And when you need me,
put your arms around someone
and give to them what you need to give to me.
There are so many who need so much.
I want to leave you something
much better than words or sounds.
Look for me in the people I’ve known
or helped in some special way.
Let me live in your heart
as well as in your mind.
You can love me most
by letting your love reach out to our loved ones,
by embracing them and living in their love.
Love does not die, people do.
So, when all that’s left of me is love,
give me away as best you can.

Remember me with a smile
Now my life on this earth is done.
My dreams have all been fulfilled
And a new life has just begun.

Remember me with a smile
When grief may cause you to weep.
One day we will laugh once again
When our Heavenly meeting we keep.

Let’s be thankful we shared precious love,
Keep the memories warm for a while,
Let them bring peace to your heart
And remember me – with a smile.

Memory Lane

There is a place in every heart,
They call it Memory Lane,
Where thoughts of loved ones lost
Forever will remain.
God made this special place
When He first created man,
For He knew it would be needed,
As part of our life’s plan.
He knew when loved ones left us,
We’d need some time to heal,
To come to terms with sorrow
And the loneliness we’d feel.
So when you lose a loved one
And your life is filled with pain,
The comfort of their presence
Will be found in Memory Lane.

Don’t Cry

Don’t cry any more tears for me.
I am at peace. I’m finally free.
Like the eagle in the sky,
I am soaring. So, please don’t cry.
I know you love me. I love you, too.
But, my time was over;
was finally through.
I have ascended
to a better place,
which is not confined
by time or space.
To those that loved me,
I did not fall.
I only succumbed
to a higher call.
Do not mourn me.
I am with you still.
I’ll be with you always,
from dawn..until.

Without You

It’s lonely here without you,
We miss you more each day,
For life is not the same to us,
Since you were called away.

Your resting place we visit,
Place flowers there with care,
But no one knows our heartache,
When we turn to leave you there.

Come With Me

The Lord saw you getting tired
And a cure was not to be,
So He put his arms aroud you
And whispered ‘Come with me.’
With tearful eyes we watched you suffer
And saw you fade away.
Although we loved you dearly,
We could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
Your beautiful smile at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove
He always takes the best.

It’s lonesome here without you,
We miss you so each day.
Our lives just aren’t the same
Ever since you went away.
When days are sad and lonely
And everything goes wrong,
We hear you gently whisper,
‘Cheer up and carry on.’
Each time we see your picture,
You seem to smile and say,
‘Don’t cry, I’m in God’s keeping,
We’ll meet again someday.’

Remember Only My Best

When I come to the end of my journey
and I travel my last weary mile,
just forget, if you can, that I ever frowned
and remember only the smile.
Forget unkind words I have spoken;
remember some good I have done.
Forget that I’ve stumbled and blundered
and sometimes fell by the way.
Remember I have fought some hard battles
and won, ere the close of the day.
Then forget to grieve for my going;
I would not have you sad for a day,
but in summer just gather some flowers
and remember the place where I lay,
and come in the shade of the evening
when the sun paints the sky in the west.
Stand for a few moments beside me
and remember only my best.

Just Think Of Me

Just think of me, and I’ll be there,
I’m always around, I’m everywhere,
I’m in your dreams when you sleep,
I hear your cries when you weep,
Don’t be sad, wear a smile on your face,
all my sufferings in a better place,
I’ve left this world, my bodies gone,
but in your hearts my soul lives on,
I know you’ll grieve and suffer pain
but one day soon we’ll be together again.

Angel On My Shoulder

There’s an Angel on my shoulder and I know it must be you,
A whisper in my ear from a voice I always knew.
Sometimes a gentle breeze, where it never should have been,
You let me know you’re with me from a place where time begins.

A touch when no one’s there, a flicker in my eye,
a rainbow where a storm had been, in a dark and rolling sky.
I know you are my angel, and your heart goes on in me
your love shines down around me from a place I cannot see.

Some may think I’m crazy, some may not believe,
but I can feel your spirit, I know you’ll never leave.
Your wings wrap me in warmth, your halo shows me light,
Your whispers keep me safe, in the darkness of the night.

It really does not matter,
That no one else can see.
Just like in the days before,
It is always you and me.

We Shed A Tear

We shed a tear for your tomorrow
That now you will never know
We shed a tear for your yesterdays
And the fears you could not show
We shed a tear for our todays
As we offer you goodbye
We shed our tears of sorrow
As we let your spirit fly
Be contented in your journey.

The Journey’s End

When a person reaches advanced age
after having lived a full life,
Dying becomes almost as natural
as the picking of a ripe apple
or the falling of a brightly coloured leaf in autumn.
The harvest has been gathered in,
the journey ended,
the story told.
Life’s tasks finished
and neatly bound together like a sheaf of wheat.
There is a roundness about a person’s life,
a sense of completion and fulfilment;
And while there is sadness in him leaving us,
there is a sense of worth and achievement,
so much so,
that the funeral becomes a celebration;
He is with us today as he will always be.

Dancing With The Angels

Memories surround me
Sadness has found me
I’d do anything for more time
Never before
has someone meant more
I can’t get you out of my mind
There is so much that I don’t understand
But I know……
You’re dancing with the angels
Walking in new life
Dancing with the angels
Heaven fills your eyes…
Now that you’re dancing with the angels.
You had love for your family
Love for all people
Love for the Father and Son
Your heart will be heard
in your unspoken words
Through generations to come
There is so much that I don’t understand,
But I know……
You’re dancing with the angels
Walking in new life
Dancing with the angels
Heaven fills your eyes…
Now that you’re dancing
We’re only here
for such a short time…
I’m gonna stand up,
And shout out
And sing Hallelujah
And one day I’ll see you again…
And we’ll be dancing with the angels
Walking in new life
Dancing with the angels
Heaven will fill our eyes…
Now that we’re dancing with the angels
We’ll be dancing with the angels
Dancing with the angels,
Dancing with the angels
